leap day

in the words of the president of my group who is also temporarily technically my boss since my boss announced he is leaving 'it's been a day'. though really it's been about 2.5 days. let me explain.

we've teamed up with another hispanic brand at my company to relaunch one of their web verticals as my brand. this is actually really really cool b/c there is not a ton of content for hispanic women in the marketplace and it's a project we've been working on getting approval for forever. since the press release last week there's been lots of industry/advertiser/internal buzz about the project. this means that we need to get our act together to launch it tout suite.

in that vein i set up about 12 meetings late last week so that their team could come up to nyc and learn all about my brand. this is not an exaggeration (and was a great use of my time but someone has to do it i guess). mon and tues we were in back-to-back meetings from 10 - 6 pm, and then we had dinner on monday night and drinks on tuesday night. socializing is hard work, as is not being able to do your own work b/c you're spending every second of the day with another group. to be fair, it went really well, but it was exhausting and there is so much work to be done. we went out last night to karaoke after drinks (must remember to stop doing karaoke every 3 days or self will never have a voice again) and i kept reassuring them that it was fine if they were exhausted/wanted to go home, etc. i called it quits at 1:30. THEY STAYED OUT TIL FIVE AM. and we had a breakfast meeting this morning! ridic.

on top of that we moved a bunch of sales and sales marketing people from the midtown office down to chelsea market and all moved desks so i had to pack up on friday and run out the door to a meeting and came in on monday to a new desk with nothing set up and had to run off to meetings for this project. it's been a very disorienting few days.

that being said, it seemed like things went well, and everyone is very positive about the meetings. just about everyone at my brand met them so it's really felt like a team effort and is strangely serving to bring my brand closer together in that we're actually socializing and talking about our personal lives. that's pretty cool (and long overdue). on top of that we're going to miami in a few weeks for what will likely be another whirlwind few days, but it feels like the reward for a lot of hard work. it should be exciting if we ever get it off the ground, but i've been here before and there are the blog posts to prove i've made it through.

finally had a second to myself after they left today so i cut out early and went to the gym to blow off some steam which was amazing and have ordered what has become my comfort food - a garden salad and cheesy breadsticks from dominoes (don't judge). will start again fresh tomorrow. no update on what's happening when my boss leaves - again - it's been an interesting couple of weeks. #sigh.

*to make this post somewhat relevant to the title - i stupidly wore navy blue pants and a yellow cardigan yesterday instead of today for leap day (hi people who watch 30 rock). fail.

strong-arming people into relationships is never a good idea

if there's one thing i've learned in 2012 that would be it, but this particular post title is mostly in reference to a conversation i was having with kevin on the topic, and he begged me to make it a title for a post. basically i meant it in the sense that if things are right they flow, they don't require an inordinate amount of finagling and scheming to make them happen and if they aren't happening there's prob a reason why. it's the hardest thing in the world to walk away from something or take action that goes against what you really want even when you  know it's right, but i feel like there's always a kind of quiet relief when you finally do get around to doing what you know you should have done all along.

lots has happened since i last posted - mainly my boss announced that he was leaving a few weeks ago. this happened three days after my review where we discussed my future at the company (review went great for the record) with nary a peep from him that he was planning on leaving. my boss was a big reason why i like my job, and while i'm not worried about having a job after he leaves, it does kind of change things. it's funny how you can be going along thinking things will stay the same for the foreseeable future and then bam! just kidding. dust is still settling but it's certainly a game changer. I've been looking for a blog post or an article that has steps to take when you're boss tells you they're leavimorbid so far all I can find is advice for telling the boss you're leaving. I'll write it myself - as soon as I figure out what those steps are that is. more to come i'm sure.

ceppos asked me to be her maid of honor! i was thrilled to be asked and after being a bridesmaid in tay tay's wedding in december, am psyched to help her and the boy have a fantastic wedding celebration at the end of the summer. wahoo!

i went on my first blind date/real date in nyc. my coworker set us up - the connection between her and him were about five removed and he was older, though not old, and divorced. at beth's valentine's day fondue party last week one of her friends was mentioning 'date of the month club', where she solicited her friends to set her up on a date each month. this gal had started in november and was now seriously dating mr. july. it's a good mindset to get in to, and it's always nice to talk to someone who doesn't already know your life story, so i think it might be worth trying. i wore a hot pink pencil skirt from jcrew and we had a couple drinks and dinner. don't know if me and mr. february will do it again but i was glad i did it at least once and i'm going to try to set up more dates in the near future.

i was just at a start-up networking event with my coworker - getting lots of practice meeting random people and talking business lately as she drags me out to stuff (speaking of dates, these bd events are 95% guys - it's like shooting fish in a barrel). i stopped in to forever 21 on my way home to shop for 80's attire for the rubix kube 80's cover band party at the yale club on friday night. we're planning to pregame (the open bar - danger) with an 80's power hour and then head over to mingle with the young alums. in addition to the electric blue spandex skirt i purchased i picked up a floppy hat - ala carly simon on the cover of her 'no secrets' album. i'm not usually one for trends, but i've been admiring them for awhile and i feel very boho chic. will be perfect for my work trip to miami in a couple weekends.

that's all for now friends. maybe this blog doesn't provide quality or quantity, but i hope you find it entertaining! ;-P

refreshing and youthful

the best part of the superbowl BY FAR was during the half-time show when the opening notes of 'like a prayer' were played in indianapolis. i was watching it with ceppos and both of us screamed 'like a prayer'! it seems sigma delts the world over had a similar response. had sort of forgotten madonna sang that song and it was potentially an option for superbowl, but it will be forever ingrained in our blood thanks to sigma delt rush as undergrads. it's funny that's one of the things that ties sigma delts together. you can't discount the value of bench dancing and music in the heart of a sigma delt. i thought madonna did a pretty good job with the half-time show - the medley of songs and guest appearances were awesome and julia's brother was wondering if it was too late to sign some of the gladiators who carried madonna on to the stage to the patriots secondary (it was. rip patriots).

speaking of sd, headed up to campus tonight for winter carnival festivities and club officers weekend. not sure if they did this when we were undergrads but the alumni office does a program for club officers and volunteers on campus this weekend ever year. it's a chance to network, meet folks from the college and spend some time hearing about what's going on at dartmouth. a lot of the events conflict with good old-fashioned hanging out, but i'm really really going to try to make it to the key ones this year (last year i did not). excited to play some pong and hang out in between being all professional like. and i'd really like to go ice skating on occom pond - we'll see if that happens.

otherwise just continue to be amazed at the opportunities that come my way - both big and small. i'm having a blast saying yes to things and checking yes for fun. 'feels like some kind of ride but it's just turning out to be life going absolutely perfectly' - storypeople :)

five years after

(riff off the band 'ten years after'. the name refers to the fact the band was founded ten years after what they considered the beginning of rock and roll - 1956 and elvis)

tomorrow - feb 5 - is my five year anniversary at nbc. i never ever thought i would work for a company this long but somehow days turn into weeks turn into years. i've been pretty happy at nbc - they've done a great job finding opportunities to pursue my career interests, though i suppose that might have more to do with the people i was working with than anything else. life really is all about relationships kids - you heard it hear first.

in recognition of my achievement (?) i got to pick something from a corporate gift website. i picked a knife set. stay with me here - i've been meaning to buy a knife set for a long time - cutting things with butter knives wasn't going super well - but sort of never got around to it (story of my life) so i'm pretty darn excited about this.

had dinner with huyett last week and was telling her how it was a 22-piece set and how excited i was to bone something (one of the knives is a boning knife. i will never use it to bone something). it was straight out of 'modern family' with a 'heard it as i said it' moment but it just cracked me up. hadn't laughed that hard in a long time.

in other lyon news, they have turned an event space at chelsea market into a swamp to promote the history channel's upcoming season of 'swamp people'. again - stay with me. we watched a ton of this show over christmas b/c my parents are super into it - it chronicles the lives of people who hunt alligators in the louisiana swamp. it's strangely addictive and i have learned a lot about alligator hunting (again from wikipedia). apparently you get the month of september to do your hunting - that's it - and you can only get tags to hunt if you own the swamp that you're hunting on. a big alligator can bring in almost $1k, and at 300 tags per season that is not too shabby, esp since your money goes a lot further in louisiana than nyc. the exhibit is really neat (live alligators and water! next to gourmet food shops!) and i'm getting a pretty big kick out of it too. go history channel!

still a little rattled after the events of last weekend, but i will say thank god for the beacoup music, poetry, and writing that comes from experiencing love and loss. it's been easy to find ways to put what i'm feeling into words and i think that's half the battle. i haven't sung yet, but it's going to be okay. :)
