there's a lot of excitement in apt 7 today b/c 'greek' is back tonight! an excellent substitute for actually still being in college, vin and i are hooked on the drama about a group of undergrads at a school in ohio (way too sunny for ohio but okay) and the greek frats and sororities they're in and want to emulate casey and rebecca's haircuts.

so far, no luck, but still worth checking out. seasons 1 and 2 are on itunes and the abc family site.

got back from my night in boston around 7. headed up yesterday after i got my hair did to see ceppos and laurak, who was on her way back to chi-town from key west for a few weeks. huyett had to work at the last second and couldn't join in the reuning. had a low-key visit, but wonderful wonderful to see both of them. laurak and i ventured out to central in cambridge on saturday night to a house party - saw some d kids - and then we all met up with elise for brunch and several rounds of catch phrase (JAGUAR!) this morning. gave laurak an eye and hearing test for her coast guard license application and then i headed back to nyc. elise is working away in her grad school program and planning on hiking a section of the appalacian trail in late may for several days - very cool.

catch phrase is rapidly becoming the go-to, as we spent some time playing on friday night to decide who would sit out during the next pong game. with the warmer weather comes more outdoor pong, and the '08s came over to play, including joe and craig. at this point the awkwardness is just too tangled up to be an issue, slash i don't care enough about the situations to make it one. plus, we are all clearly going to continue to hang out so really not much point in subscribing to the awkwardness. i think it's safe to say that for the first time i have guys who are friends (granted, i've hooked up with three of them), but given all the bitching that vin and i did on friday night with hearn, we've crossed into the friend territory. it's a nice change for me - have lots and lots of girl friends, but guys are a first.

in other news, went down to the financial district on thursday to meet up with taylor at her office going-away drinks. she's headed back to florida for a few months, before starting b school at wharton in philadelphia this summer. drinks with her coworkers was a fitting way to wrap up the three years of playing basketball on her company team in the nyc professional bball league. was super sad to say good-bye to ms. duvall, as i will def miss seeing her in new york, but i know she'll be back up this way again and philadelphia is a hop, skip and a jump to the south.

well kiddos - i suppose i owe you an update. been busy taking care of business, which makes the type-a in me quite happy, but doesn't really make for good stories or anything.

pretty quiet, low-key weekend filled with checkbook balancing, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, gym - all the things i don't get to do when i'm traveling during the weekend. friday night post-mash-up party, which vin enjoyed, i was less than enthused, though i'm glad we checked it out, we went and met up with my coworker and his friend from la. we were at a really dbish bar on the lower east side, which meant i got pretty depressed at the state of our options in the men dept in nyc. as vin pointed out, it was a pretty shitty situation on the whole, but it's really disheartening to look around a bar filled with the best girl/guy ratio you've seen in nyc yet and know that the majority of them are doing coke in the bathroom and thinking that talking to you = an automatic swoon. trying awfully hard not to do the 'grass is greener' comparison, but sometimes it just seems hopeless. so it was appropriate that my coworker sent around the link to this site today: love in the dumps. looks to be amusing, and perhaps the change in perspective that i need.

got up early on monday morning and went to the manhattan dmv to renew my driver's license, which expired on my birthday. was much less painful than i thought, and i'll have my new one in 2-3 weeks. was VERY glad to get that off my plate.

the other thing hanging over me was my taxes - as you prob know - our zipcode changed when we moved last march (i mean the city of new york was in the process of changing it, aside from the fact we moved to a different zipcode than the one we were in) and the payroll system at work didn't recognize it as manhattan, and stopped taking out manhattan taxes, so i owe the state of new york like 2k. apparently it is the employee's job to make sure that your witholdings are actually being witheld, so i encourage all of you to double-check your paychecks to be sure all is ship-shape, lest you find yourself in my situation. was dealing with penalty forms and nonsense and finally i just said 'fuck it' and did it through h+r block. $50 bucks, but if all goes well, then it will be '50 bucks well worth it' (ala the mighty ducks 2).

tomorrow night is bowling at work. we bowl in a media league, which is interesting, but it doesn't start til 8:30 on the west side of manhattan - aka about as far away from our apartment as you can get. regardless, i think i am going to throw down. too much taking care of business - i think it's time for some fun.

very excited for sat night in boston with some of the usual suspects (though the thought of another bus trip makes me want to boot. bus to boston: lather, rinse, repeat). this trip will be worth it i hope, as we'll get to see laurak, ceppos and hopefully elise. def feeling a little nostalgia for sigma delt and dartmouth, so it will be good to be in the company of like-minded spirits.

amazing show last night from fleetwood mac at madison square garden. they played for two hours with more enthusiasm and energy than bands half their age. we were positing - is there an equivalent of fleetwood mac today - a band that has both men and women where each member has contributed more or less equally to the band's success? we were hard pressed to find an example.

i think so much of the reason why i like fleetwood mac is that all their songs are rooted in turmoil and chaos, which the band freely acknowledged. but it's something we can relate to. art reflects life, and they had a lot of material. the band was, of course, without christine mcvie, and i kept thinking what it must be like for them to be without such an instrumental (pun intended) piece of the equation. singing her songs - 'don't stop' for example - do they feel like something is missing? this is a band that my dad introduced me to - he loved them when he was in high school and college, and here i was, 26 years later singing and relating to the same songs that struck a chord with him. it gets into your head.

was a surprisingly mixed crowd - lots of older women, but also some people our age. seats turned out to be better than anticipated, with a clutch bathroom situated right behind us. all in all - a great time. so glad to have gotten to go!

pulling myself together this morning. march has played a mean joke on this first day of spring and it is flurrying big white flakes. wish i could be heading down to florida with for diana and elise for whit's wedding tomorrow. some warm sunshine and quality time with the usual suspects sounds delightful. fortunately, there is some on my agenda, if not in sunny florida.

so! me, vin, charlo and kristin are going to see fleetwood mac tomorrow night at madison square garden. we have terrible seats, but at least we're in the arena, and it's the greatest hits tour, so it will be better than the time that skips and gretchen and i drove down to worcester soph spring to see them play (aka - skips and i begged and pleaded until gretchen agreed to drive us) as part of the 'say you will tour', which meant that they played primarily new stuff from their latest cd ('say you will').

fleetwood mac gets me every time - all of them have dated/loved/broken each other's hearts and there they are standing on stage singing songs they wrote about each other to each other. talk about art reflecting life and using your angst to make art! i couldn't do it. i can hardly speak to my exes, let alone reminisce with them about days gone by. incredible.

a tale of four dance parties

fun things! vin and i just went to see the 'ting tings'! (yes that rhymes). spent all of st. paddy's day weekend in boston singing and dancing to their two biggest hits 'that's not my name' and 'shut up and let me go', so when i stumbled upon a listing about the venue they were playing in nyc tonight, we decided we had to go.

super short play list, but a really fun, visual concert at an intimate place way over on the west side highway. we felt extremely hipster/nyc/out of place, but been really into alternative, edgy music lately (for me at least), including franz ferdinand and the aforementioned '3Oh!3'. guess i just need a new sound.

had a great time in boston over the weekend - some bhp with christine on fri night. vin hung out long enough to watch duke beat bc, for which we almost got beat up when we cheered, and then we all played some foose, hung out with some sig ep friends of kevin's (story of my life). kevin had stolen a shamrock from the wall of a bar down the street, so i stuck it under my shirt and showed it to anyone who asked. love it.

sat christine and i were very productive. we went to the supermarket to get breakfast materials for sun morning, made lime and orange jello shots, for which linsalata was instrumental, forwarding me a clutch sae house blitz from june 2005 with the jello shot recipe, and then headed off to the museum of science. we enjoyed the frog special exhibit, but thought the 'mythical creatures' exhibit left something to be desired. next time we're going to the children's museum, as we both have fond memories of visits when we were little.

sat night there was an aggressive pregame with andre and boones and an impromptu dance party. the trophy from jimmy buffett came out and was the focal point of a montage of pictures. i read caroline 'bitter with baggage' and then we headed out to phoenix landing for the second dance party of the weekend.

suma and pj, as well as some of vin's other friends from duke had come out to meet us, and were initially very skeptical as to the legitness of the bar, but dj vinny soon came on and proved that we do know what we're talking about when we say awesome dance party. he delivered a solid performance, with many classics played. everyone had a rocking good time, and i sweated through my clothes for the second time after some athletic dancing with several boys. everyone danced their faces off and we shut down the bar again.

sun morning christine made me and vin a delicious breakfast of waffles, eggs and bacon, which we topped off with mimosas. we headed out to southie to meet up with caroline, where we were guests at a random party for the second year in a row. it was a GORGEOUS day in boston, so we sat on the roof deck (view of the rooftops of southie to the left. it was like a drunk person's mary poppins), drank boones and bud light, and some irish coffee, played some beruit, talked some trash and danced a bit (dance party #3). i had brought my kelly green 'n.r.o life' shirt to wear to spark conversation, which it def did, as i must have explained the meaning of 'n.r.o' at least 20 times. no one understood but seemed okay about it.

then we went across the street to another party and danced some more there (dance party #4), once again taking over a party. then vin and i hightailed it back to nyc. super solid performance all around. ceppos was out of town and reiten couldn't come either - both of you were missed - but there's always 'show me your shamrock 2010' to look forward to.

i still have no voice - going on day 7. my coworkers think all i do is party - which isn't entirely true. i go to bed early and work out and stuff sometimes. i just like to sing. and have been sick for the last week or so. sad state of affairs.

non-sad state of affairs include: bocce on wed with will, fleetwood mac on thursday with vin and charlo and then the mash-up party (finally!) on friday night. will report back. in more fun things ahead, laurak will be in boston next sat - going up to see her then - and then boxa has booked a ticket to nyc to come visit in april. 'there's just too much to see waiting in front of me and i know that i just can't go wrong!'

the office

so we're over in our new space for work as of friday, but friday didn't count b/c i was wasted and unorganized. a few observations:

1. we don't yet have running drinking water as the kitchens aren't finished being built yet. never realized how much water i drink in a day until they take it away and you have to go buy it yourself. i've been trying to hydrate more in general as one of the few things i can easily do for myself - out of the coach caldwell xc team trifecta of 'hydration, nutrition, rest' (sometimes i manage the rest part too) - plus, when i work (or when i studied) i constantly have to put things in my mouth (cue 'that's what she said'). i mean i need to snack or drink or something. on a good day i drink water and eat carrots. on a bad day i drink cherry coke and eat jolly ranchers. and once in college i studied with pretzels and a bag of candy corn (ate them together) and was sick to my stomach.

2. i now sit/work in a tourist attraction complete with a banana republic, a jcrew and several starbucks inches away. this is not going to be good for the budget. we also sit on a floor of 'late night with jimmy fallon' - the house band 'the roots' have their dressing room on the same hallway. just now, going to get said cherry coke i saw jimmy fallon's cue cards lying on the floor. my job is glamorous.

'an awkward morning is better than a boring night'

am late to work thanks to daylight savings nonsense, though i greatly appreciate the increased daylight later in the day, so will have to make this snappy.

yes, i survived my birthday weekend, though thursday - sunday are VERY blurry thanks to being drunk or hungover pretty much continuously. will be taking a break from aggressive drinking, after st. paddy's day in boston next weekend that is. my head already hurts thinking about the hangover.

we moved offices on thursday so got done at 3 with work. headed to the company bar (as in the bar everyone at the company hangs out at) to hang out with my coworker and this terrible girl who is now my coworker as well. it was okay while kevin was around - had a great time chatting and laughing and eating mozzerella sticks for dinner - but when he left to go meet cody and it was me, her and him i wanted to kill myself. quoth the raven - nevermore. some old guys bought me a shot of whiskey when charlie showed up and we booked it down to mike's apt to start playing pong.

when we got to his apt we discovered that his roommates had taken the pong paddles upstate (?) and we had nothing to play with. this is after i had packed the 4 paddles and 6 balls in my desk at work. so we start playing beruit until joe, in a ridiculously clutch move, shows up with balls and paddles.

play a game or two of pong and switch back to beruit. at some point miles shows up with dinner. we ask him where he'd been and he jokes that he was at the bar around the corner that has 5 shots for $10 dollars. this strikes me as a ridiculously good idea so all 7 of us go down to the bar for the ten minutes it takes to order 35 shots of jaeger, soco and lime, red-headed sluts, goldschlager and kamakize. we go around the table, do some toasts, pound them and go back upstairs to play more.

this is where things get hazy, thanks to aforementioned dinner of mozzerella sticks. vin showed up at some point and i think we had fun. was taking hits off of miles' bottle of goldschlager, left my phone and took my coworker's coat home instead of my own, which i still don't have back, and passed out before midnight and my birthday rolled around.

friday was drunk until noon, when the hangover set in, which i told several of my coworkers (bad). thanks to everyone for the bday wishes - had a delightful ice cream cake with the office - everyone was really sweet. met up with vin and celeste for dinner in the west village, and then celeste and i went to meet up with kevin and co. while vin went home to get her brother who had just arrived from boston. my phone was dead b/c i had left it at my coworkers so i was stuck with my work bberry - which i def thought i had lost for a portion of time yesterday. fortuanetly, i had outsmarted myself and put it away for sat night's company.

got kicked out of aforementioned '5 shots for 10 dollars' bar thanks to db bouncers, so we went around the corner to the st. mark's ale house, where we sat at a communal table and made friends with this kid who had ditched his friends for being lame. at this point, we were all in a fight with our friends, so we had a great time complaining about everyone.

hung out until vin and her bro showed up, and then tried to go sing karoke with no luck. ended up at the bar '2x4', which we seem to be freqenting a lot, where we ran into some sig eps again. some awkwardness ensued in that joe and his gf were there and he and i are not speaking, along with dancing, hula-hooping, and shots. poured myself in a cab to head home around 3. day two of aggressive drinking.

sat vin and i had brunch at 7a in the east village and then got mani/pedis. i picked out a fun pink color which turned out to be called 'my place or yours', which is how i knew it was the right decision. picked up the ice cream cake and hung out/napped until it was time to get ready.

in typical march fashion, the weather was gorgeous, so vin and i played some pong until rast showed up. did some champagne pre-gaming and cake with cody and vin's friend and then headed out. had a blast at whiskey town, but much of the night is a blur. went by super quick - saw megh for the second night in a row, stein, who i hadn't seen in forever, a couple of the coworkers, celeste for the second night in a row, some of the duke crew - thanks to everyone who came out and danced on the benches with us! ended up making out for a portion of time with some kid from philadelphia which was highly enjoyable and while he came home with me (got to use the 'my place or yours line' - love it) no one knew where he was in the morning. rast gets MVP (most valuable partier) of the night for rocking out on the benches and taking COPIOUS pictures, which i will put up if facebook ever lets me.

all in all, a great weekend. one thing to note, the boston boy and i are no longer seeing each other, which everyone seems to think makes him a jerk for saying this to me on my bday. he had talked about coming down when i saw him last weekend, and then i hadn't heard from him, so i blitzed to check in and that is what he responded with; i think it was more of a matter of him needing to tell me why he wasn't coming down. am a little sad b/c i do think it had the potential to go somewhere, but there was no way it could with him working/coaching/schooling 24-7 and me being in nyc. and i am certainly not ready to date him seriously, so that is that. as christine said, it was probably the longest long-distance one night stand on record as we started seeing each other in july. goes to show you never can tell.

so! thanks to everyone for participating in the 26th bday celebration. missed those of you who couldn't join, but i'm sure there is lots more fun on the horizon, starting with boston on friday night. oof - my head.

quiet i'm dealing with idiots

in a fight with the massachusetts dmv. well, the new york dmv too. my driver's license expires at midnight tonight and i can't get a new york one until the massachusetts dmv sends me a letter stating when the license was issued, as it doesn't say it on the actual license and that is a new york requirement.

which means i will be bringing my passport with me everywhere from now on. or until the mass dmv gets their act together and sends me my damn letter. anyone want to take bets on when that will be? called them two weeks ago and they said they would send, but it really doesn't take that long for mail to get from mass to ny. idiots.

1. article exploring how many friends a person really can have. been having this conversation on-going with will, who thinks that it's weird that i can't really point to a best friend. i have lots and lots of friends - particularly girlfriends, which i think is the most important - and i don't mean they are my friends in the 'facebook friend' sense, but i don't know that i can say that one person is my 'best friend'. i like this definition of friends:

There are friends, ie people who know you well, you confide in, could ring any time day or night, nothing changes regardless how long it's been since you see them, have shared history, issues and pasts with, are always open and honest with you, and you know they will be part of your future.

has nothing to do with how frequently i see or talk to someone, but whether we're of the same mind. that being said, many of my good friends today were not in my life in anyway before college so who's to say who will be in my life in five years? or is it that after college you just make less friends? i would argue against that theory, but read it - brings up some interesting points.

and speaking of friends, a happy early birthday to boxa who turns 26 on thursday (hell of a lot of pisces around). thank you for putting up with my nonsense and i hope you sing, eat cake, drink and celebrate like i was there.

2. article about why the smartest people have the toughest time dating. explains SO much for all of us! didn't want to offend anyone by implying either they weren't smart or had a tough time dating, so i figured the blog was the best place to post this. but seriously the article makes some good points about what it means to have been labeled 'smart' growing up and how the same thought-processes and mindset that have made us successful in other areas of our lives is getting in the way of the dating part.

main recommendations:

1. stop being a snob about who you consider 'datable'
2. stop overthinking it and hit on the person already

rejection is a part of life. embrace it. viva la rejection! voila - that's it! i expect to be invited to all your weddings.

office move tomorrow means early release from work at 3 pm. prob is not the best idea to start drinking immediately, not if i hope to have any sort of longevity this weekend. have bought a super short, scandalous fuschia dress for sat night. pretty good odds a lot of people will see my boobs and/or my butt. hopefully not at the same time unless i've engineered it as such. ;-P

of banks and desks and crockpots

ing direct, the online bank where i have all my savings, is doing this big outdoor advertising campaign in nyc and boston. you've probably seen the ads: they're orange and generally talk about saving money in some sense of the word. the pr firm i used to work for did pr for them, which is how i discovered the company. it's based in amsterdam and entirely online and one of the things i really like about ing direct is that they make it easy and are very supportive of saving money. they WANT you to save your money, unlike a lot of banks. ergo - the ad campaign. but everytime i see one on a taxi or a bus or a billboard, i feel guilty that i'm not saving enough. guess that's the idea right?

my group at work is moving offices on thursday - a block down the street into the mother ship. we have a brand new floor, new space, new people around. less offices than we did, which is creating all sorts of interesting drama as people who had offices before don't get them and think that they should. also feels a little like moving desks in elementary school or something. everyone wants to know where they're sitting, who they're near, etc. stay tuned on this front.

impulse bought a crockpot yesterday. was really in the mood for some beef stew and it didn't seem like there was any way to get it without a crockpot. my mom and my grandmother have always done very well with crockpot cooking, so i'm excited to give it a try. i also bought season 3 of 'coupling', as it was on sale and would get me free shipping from amazon, only to have vin tell me she had bought it for me for my birthday. cracked up a lot over that one, and then cancelled the order and bought 'ocean's eleven' instead.

my brother is down in houston with my sister for the month of march working the rodeo at my sister's stadium. apparently he is a beer vendor. he is excited about it because taylor swift will be playing a concert one of the nights he's there. i am interested to see what he thinks about houston, as i still have a hard time believing that my sister actually likes it down there. then again, she didn't get a foot of snow yesterday. suddenly i see the basis of its appeal.

six more weeks of winter

wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, nyc actually got some of the snow that was predicted as part of this massive snowstorm that's been traveling up the east coast. we've literally gotten none of the previous snow that has been blanketing the northeast over the last two months. we've had lots of snow in the air, but nothing has stuck. wish the real world had snow days. skipped the 6:30 am gym class i like to do this morning in favor of another hour of being cozy in bed. so today i'm debating: snow boots or galoshes? snow boots will keep my feet warm, but galoshes will keep my feet dry. hmmmm.

had a lovely time in new england this past weekend. headed up to boston on friday night and met up with the boston boy. hadn't seen him since new years, though i do believe i will see him for the next two weekends in a row. making up for lost time and all that. we crashed on friday night which was a great call - can't imagine how i'd be feeling today if we'd gone out.

saturday morning, after a trip to downtown crossing to go to a cvs (love cvs) to pick up some of the things i forgot while hungover packing on friday i met my parents at south station and we headed up to new hampshire. did some walking down memory lane while my parents drove us by the house we used to live in, the hospital i was born in, the babysitter that used to babysit for me (seriously). i miss it up there - it's so pretty and there's so much SPACE. new hampshire all the way.

headed over to exeter to see my sister around 1. it was exeter/andover weekend with no classes, so campus felt deserted, but we walked around and checked out the buildings before heading over to the gym. watched some of the girls hockey game, chatted with mr. parris, my old cross-country coach, and then it was time for the girls bball game against andover. jill reinjured an old shoulder injury in december, so only played three games with the team and couldn't play on saturday, but it was the last game of the season, the last game for mr. mahoney - the basketball coach i also played for - every bball team plays better with my dad coaching from the stands (true story. money quote: c'mon ref, this isn't the nba) and it was andover!

it was a great game - last time exeter played andover they lost by 25. this time exeter was down by 5 at the half, and down by 1 with a minute to go. they scored to go ahead by 1 at 30 seconds and then again at 20 seconds to win 51 to 48. an awesome game - the gym was packed and i screamed myself hoarse cheering.

had a brief reception for mr. mahoney and then headed back to boston to christine's to pregame with caroline for ceppos's 25th bday. kevin came over with his czech family friend who was visiting and then we headed out to central in cambridge to meet up with ceppos. all of us were itching to dance so we went to phoenix landing - a divey kind of bar with benches like sigma delt's to dance on and FANTASTIC music. got up on the benches to dance and only got down once to pee for 4 hours straight until the bar closed at 2. every song was magic and it was soooo amazing to dance! they don't have places like that in nyc. good music, yes, but it never turns into a dance party like it does in boston.

headed back to nyc around 12 yesterday, after traipsing around in the snow to go return elise's ipod/see her house. it's lovely, she had a crackling fire going, and we had a nice cup of coffee before i got on the bus. happily, i missed the bad weather and had a relatively quick trip back (4 hours). all in all a really fun weekend and really excited to run it back again this weekend for my birthday and next weekend in boston for st. paddy's day.

in other news, currently obsessed with a band called '3Oh!3' from boulder, colorado (the band name is boulder's area code apparently). kind of elements of 'the scissor sisters' and 'mgmt' but they have a pretty eclectic range of songs. check out: don't trust me' and 'still around.
