blitz bombed

– just got maynard's automatic reply alerting the world that her undergrad blitz acct would be expiring at the end of dec. i know you non-d types have trouble understanding the appeal of blitz – but it really is your lifeblood on campus. when you get parkhursted they take away your blitz acct – and i don’t think there’s any better way to say ‘you are not allowed to be part of the d community– so we are taking away your blitz acct and you can have it back when you have learned to play nice.’ talk about cutting you off. i think one of the saddest days of my life thus far was the day I tried to log into my undergrad acct in late june of last summer and realized it no longer existed. like a ship passing in the night – i had officially graduated from the d undergraduate community to a status where undergrads got annoyed when they found you had changed the ‘network’ to alumni in berry library or on their computer that you borrowed to check blitz during a wknd visit. sad sad state of affairs.

i did the gym class i like to do last night – kicked my ass as usual – but the gym instructor reminds me of boxa for some reason. she’s always going around – no nonsense style – being like up! up! lift those abs higher! it’s strangely comforting – in the same way that you’d sit in a crew boat and know that though what you were about to do was going to hurt like hell – you weren’t alone. and since boxa has failed to recognize that while she gets a (somewhat) daily dose of me through this blog – i get nothing in the way of a boxa fix from her, i suppose this draconian gym instructor will have to do.

speaking of boxa – i bought a three-disc dvd set of the early years of sesame street on friday – and the v. first episode (1969) features the w word segment about wanda the witch who wears a worm around her waist and washes her wig in the well on Wednesdays in winter. i think it must be fate.

talked to allette on saturday – she was in the woods over the tday holiday so that she can go home for xmas instead. we had a delightful time chatting and catching up – good lord I miss that girl. she says soon she will have to start thinking about how long she wants to stay where she is – but not yet. ;-) i also heard from laurak yesterday. she was, as usual, in an airport – waiting for her luggage to head up to fairlee/htown for her outdoor training class. she’ll be doing that for a bit in dec and hanging around the old haunts if you’re going to be in the area before deciding about moving to ca to work at a camp on catalina island. ca dreaming indeed.

we need a little xmas, right this very minute

<---It's too early for this nonsense!

on the bus ride home from boston I realized why (most) people get the day after tday off – to decorate their homes for xmas and not waste a single SECOND of the tday/xmas holiday window. I could not believe how many houses/trees/railroad bridges had been decorated already – a mere three days after the turkeys had been consumed. And I’m not just hating on xmas – in fact, charlo and I are going to the nutcracker on wed to sit in $26 dollar seats that will have a terrible view precisely b/c we realize that the experience is about music and the atmosphere – not the ballet (though Mulley did point out that most people go to the ballet to actually watch the ballet. We’ll address this aspect next year). It just seemed a little early to be lighting up the neighborhood.

as usual, being home means that one encounters people from the past whom you haven’t seen in awhile. One of those people was my exbf from freshman year of hs. He was a senior, I was a freshman – we were going different ways – but I’ve loved 4 guys in my life thus far and he was not only one of them, he was the first.

ran into him quite literally at the alumni xc run on my high school’s home xc course. Lots of blasts from the past – but this was the biggest. Last I heard he was married and living on the cape again – but hadn’t talked to him in a long time. Was reminded of the quote: ‘so you ran into your exbf. How did he look? More importantly – how did YOU look?” I am happy to report that I looked much better – but I also didn’t feel anything. Not attraction, not love, not interest. A tiny bit of nostalgia and the sense that we were tied together by something important once – but that was it. I hang on to stuff really tightly – you can’t believe the kind of stuff that happens when you let go – and it was nice to know that 9 years later I was over it/him/us. that all things really do pass with time and we move on without even realizing it. was v. comforting.

back in the nyc saddle again – lots of festive stuff to look forward to. yesterday was huyett’s birthday – so lots of happy bday wishes to her and hopes for many more.

for the holidays go home sweet home

hi everyone! happy day after thanksgiving. hope you're all enjoying a day off, a food coma, or some such thing.

as usual - some ruminations and observations to report. first off - some cheesy, doodad-like remarks - so if you are not in the mood - you might want to skip a paragraph or two. lately i've been thinking about love and how it's hard to find and will you ever find it again? is there really only one person out there for each of us? and those odds really kind of suck if there is. but i always come back to realizing that while in the conventional way there might not be 'love' in my life right now - there is love anyway. the love of friends, a person that i never thought i could feel so strongly about even if that will never turn into what conventional society would define as a relationship, etc. etc. i think so much of life comes from us thinking that we know how things are going to go, how things are going to be. there's a storypeople: "the future doesn't have to look any particular way she said, but around here, if it doesn't, there are a lot of people who will never speak to you again." so just b/c i don't have what i think i want, doesn't mean i don't have it - just not in the way i think it should be. and in a lot of ways - that's so comforting - ie it's not me - i'm fabulous - and someday it will all work out. or maybe not. but that doesn't matter b/c i am already incredibly grateful for what i do have and the people i know (hi everyone) that love me too. so thanks for that and to you all and to many more years of friendship and love and laughter. :)

home again home again - enjoying the break. didn't get home til 11 pm on wed night - bit of a hellish trip - but it's over now. it rained all day yesterday - but the warm, foggy, windy rain of coastal areas which is fine with me. i went running through hyannisport and by the ocean with the rain driving in my face and it was amazing. empty roads, good music and my thoughts pounding pavement. i love it.

been playing pong with my bro in the basement - he confessed that he doesn't really even like drinking - he just likes playing pong. interesting. that was where i got into trouble over homecoming - i just wanted to keep playing pong. rats.

i got up this morning at 4:30 to go to best buy for their $250 computer deal - stood in line - got in there, they were sold out and i was home by 5:30. the whole situation was so amusing. lesson learned tday 06: if you're going to do something crazy like that - do it the whole way and make sure you get what you came for. should have gotten up at 3.

being home again means re-discovering the clothes that you didn't bring with you when you moved - but you still like them so you haven't thrown them out yet. one of these things (that doesn't fall under this category entirely) is my letter sweater from d. it's a really nice sweater, and i love wearing d stuff b/c you can meet people that are in some way affiliated with the school, but i just can't bring myself to wear my letter sweater around. it's like a major major self call that i, who wears a shirt that says 'self call' - can't even bring myself to wear. but then it's like - so when do i wear it? i feel like i need some bf at another school that i can give it to to wear as a token of our relationship or something. or maybe i've just been reading too much old school ad in the animal house book. hmmmm.

saga continues with massive cooperation whose name is also a verb. have been bounced around from coast to coast and i don't even know which end is up. my dad suggested this was b/c they don't know which end is up either - they're growing too quickly. that makes sense but still it's like - is there any method to this madness? but is there any method to any of the madness?

answers are the easy parts, questions raise the doubts. - jb ;-) and on that note, we cue the music.

points to ponder

this i like:

talking about music is like talking about sex. can you describe it? are you supposed to?

— bruce springsteen on vh1 storytellers

no wonder they call him the boss! ;-)

was bumming around barnes and nobles waiting for dinner time with megh and kjb at the spotted pig, so i checked into the humor section where i rediscovered the 'bad girl's guide to getting what you want' (i believe ally has mine and is holding it hostage til i remove my mattress from the apt entrance - but i digress) and the quote: 'note to self: why be a gossiper when you can be a gossipee?' amen i say. and it seemed to resonate.

also discovered this hilarious book that provides equations to tell you the answers to things like do i have a snowball's chance in hell with her, and should i call in sick. i'm seriously thinking of purchasing it.

an update on holiday plans that i know about: ceppos is off to texas tonight, laurak left for florida yesterday - we chatted in the airport about prideful and reckless jigs - and diana will actually be in nyc with evan over the wknd - but of course, i will not be here. that is the most frustraiting thing about living in nyc - everyone comes home for the holidays - but if i go home too than i am not here (obvi) disaster. it's a good thing they will all be home again for dec break tres soon!

i'm off shortly for what i'm sure will be a hellish trip home. all i want is to play with my dogs and cat, see the fam, and run by the ocean. that's the best part of being out of school - vacations are real vacations. no work to do, nowhere to be, nadda. sometimes there's a lot to be said for the real world.

man with the [golden] gun

eeeeek! stumbled out of bed and was walking to the subway this morning when i see a sign taped to a tree saying, "security notice - someone was held up at gunpoint here by a tall man last night. look around before going in your apt and be aware when you're walking." eeeeeeeeeeeeek!

this is the lower upper west side for christ sake. we're classy. we're family. and people are being held up at gunpoint? better not tell my mom.

kind of scared to walk around outside now - but have to go meet celeste for dessert on 83rd. eeeeeeeeeek!

bit by a bat and nobody defenestrates anymore

at what age does it become unacceptable to have hickeys? i also wonder about this when it comes to binge drinking at 2 in the afternoon. was thinking today that i had reached that age - but i digress. let me begin at the beginning.

friday - that glorious day when the wknd streches ahead and you have 2990 minutes to do whatever you please - rolled around and i met charlo at times square for casino royale. thoroughly enjoyed seeing that flick - daniel craig is a good bond - not sure if i like it in the context of the bond series however - will is refusing to see it until the 7 days of 007 have passed - it will all hinge on the second bond that comes out in 2008 - but i enjoyed watching it. charlo and i had a beer before we went, and then spiked our coke with vodka (vodka. whenever. tons) which was a poor idea. drinking in movies is tough b/c you have to keep getting up and going to the bathroom which annoys your seatmates. should have remembered that from snakes on a plane (SOAP).

sat i got up v. early to take the train to stamford for a road trip with laurak to htown. it was a beautiful day for driving, we had lots of jb on the ipod, and good company. made good time up 91 and arrived around 12:30. i ran over to the choates to get my brother and he and i ran pine park and then condomidiums. it was a brisk day, but hot once we got started, so i took off my shirt and tied it around my waist with the end result of burrs all over my shirt so i couldn't wear it. nice lyon.

swung by the d on the way back to sd - chilled with kevin and jmitch while they crafted the joke issue of the d for changeover that night. i also picked up the new book by the writer of animal house. reading this book is like the ultimate d self-call. it puts to rest, once and for all, the awesomeness of d. there's a quote i particularly like

"he loved these tales of a fabled, earlier time when the AD house was some kind of crazed behaivorial zenith and outrageous Adelphians strode the earth like depraved gods, doing whatever they felt like, and the good times never stopped.
chris miller 'the real animal house'

this is how i feel about sd sometimes - consequence free environments where everyone knows everyone's stories and are haunted by the 'ghosts of sex past' as boxa once put it. when we're all together it's like we have collective memories and everyone tells each others stories like they are our own. how can you not miss a place like that? (btw - an sd '98 had left a note on the table in the main room of sd. she said she had been in htown on biznass but had come by the house when everyone was at the formal on friday night - so she didn't get to see anyone. she did say, however, 'that the house looked and smelled the same.' good to know some things never change)

hung out with lings (who thinks she wants to go in the navy) and strack before playing some one-on-one with the bro at sd, and then heading to 3d where laurak was chilling with some ledyardites. we play a game of pong over there with otter creek october fest and then go over to xh - which is absolutely empty b/c everyone is at the hockey game. jason is dying to play pong so we swing by ad - where we get heckled by brothers who think they are sweet but get majorily shot down when they realize i'm an alum. one goes 'are you guys related?' (earlier jason had told me i was to introduce him as an '08 xh not as 'my little brother') we asked how he knew and the kid goes, 'b/c why else would a '10 and a '05 be hanging out?'

fortunately the hockey game ended and there was a mass exodus back to xh - so we joined in. important side note: the word on teh street is that jason is dirty rushing a certain track, hockey, xc house. everyone's first response to this news: i didn't know xh dirty rushed. my response? i really can't see him doing that. there's evidence to support the claim, namely he told lingley that if anyone asks he's an '09 shitbird (xh pledge) and he did have the gum the 'xh pledges have to have with them at all time' - but i really really really can't see him doing that. i think it's a dumb thing to do. haven't asked him yet - kind of don't want to know the answer. but he did complain to me about how it's impossible to hook up on campus. i laughed and said it's so easy. all you've got to do is invite them to play pong. oh wait - you're a freshman. suddenly undercover rushing plan makes sense. hmmmm.

i sat there and watched jason play pong with some brothers - drinking out of the bottle of champagne i had found in the library left over from the formal and texting with ceppos - but after that was over i was like - i'm going back to sd. i've spent too many hours watching boys play pong at xh - i'm going where i can play pong. on the way out i meet this kid who wants some of my champagne. i go who are you? he says, 'i just played pong with your brother.' i say so? and give him my business card with my mobile number on it and tell him to call me later. hilarious.

so i take all my bro's frosh friends back to sd with me and we proceed to play tree. lingley and coleman appear and are challenged to a game of tree by two of the frosh - which is hilarious. one of the '10s goes, "are they freshman?" and i go no! they're senior sisters and you've got some nerve challenging them to tree. of coursre they lose - and lingley tells me to tell them that we have a house rule that if they lose they have to streak the basement. i tell them this and lingley interupts with - we want to play again - so you can just play in your boxers. they strip down (not bad looking actually) and play again. coleman blitzed one yesterday - let me tell you - if she hooked up with him it would make his LIFE. all these poor freshman boys are starved for company. it's hilarious.

at this point i peace to go find kevin at the d changeover after party. he and joanna are three sheets to the wind and on their way to sig ep - so i go and we dance and kevin and i make out a lot before i climb out a window, we make out some more, and i run away to xh. as i was saying to laurak today - i was already at a dance party - so i couldn't start one, defenestration was the only option. it was really fun to dance and hang out though.

get back to xh - encounter the boy on the way down the stairs - he says he's goign to check blitz - do i want to come and it was all down hill from there. he had a v. creative pick up line - which he swears was not intentional. he sprays some of his cologne on and asks me if i like how it smells. one of the better lines i've encountered - tee hee hee.

was weird sleeping at xh again - it'd been an awfully long time since i had done that - but nice to have the company. i take a year and a half off from the house and revert right back to it as soon as hanging out there is an option again. talk about consistency. or having a type. unfortunately said boy is going to grad school in a southern state - so so much for a consistency thing. my sex life really is in htown. sad. and i couldn't find my underwear in the morning. i'm v. meur about this. it was a v. cute pair. and seeing how all the xc team is already giving my bro a lot of shit for my exploits - i can only imagine what's going to happen when he finds them. sigh.

also woke up with a rather obvious hickey on my neck. i remembered giving him a couple - he gave me permission! - but had not recalled that i was on the receiving end. was really great today when i went into work and realized the concealer hadn't worked at all. oh dear.

laurak and i headed out to btown early afternoon - with a stop at the co-op for provisions in manner of pilgrims. hit up the north end for tday dinner - had chicken breasts marinated in rosemary basalmic dressing, asparagus, mashed potatoes, tomatoe and basil tarts, wild rice stuffing, and pumpkin pie. we were all stuffed so we sat and looked at pictures on laurak's computer (ceppos - blitz me the pic of you, me and cody at the fall semi-formal please?) before i had to head out back to nyc.

today was a long day - date was postponed again b/c the guy had the flu - and i had to run out of work with lots left to do in order to be home for my interview. not too sure how that went - i was talking to a d '92 - but i guess we'll see. always do don't we.

two things i like a lot right now:
1. leap and the net will appear

and two - from the new dixie chicks album which i have been listening to incessantly since laurak burned me a copy:
forgive sounds good
forget i'm not sure i could
they say time heals everything
but i'm still waiting

highly recommend.

alright folks - signing off.

call on me

so i’m chilling at home last night – watching the third installment of ‘back to the future’ – which, on the whole, is a brilliant trilogy – when my phone rings.

i look at the caller id. It’s my sd little sister celeste. This is a bit surprising, but not to far out there – as I had been blitzing with her earlier in the day. (or I was blitzing – she was prob not reading them as her computer has crashed once again. when is she going to learn that you have to speak soothingly to electronics to gain their trust and THEN you can do things like throw them out the window in manner of denise richardson? It’s a good thing she has me.)

i answer the phone with my usual – hello friend! and i hear ‘we’re bringing sexyback’. at this point I’m not sure if i heard that correctly so i go WHAT? and then, in a flash of understanding, i get it: it’s sink night at sd and i am being prank called by a pledge. i proceed to banter with the caller, pulling out some of the good lines from over the many sink nights i’ve participated in – including one of my favorites from hayley coleman – ‘there’s a toucan pecking . . . there.’ (we make up a list of words, many of which are on my list of words I hate, and then make the pledges call them and say them in a normal conversational way to the person on the other end) – and end the call. i should mention here that celeste is a pledgecator – which is most likely why they were calling me – but it was hilarious to be on the other end of that for a change. made my night.

but it also made me feel old and kind of sad.

good thing there’s some usual suspect reunioning in the VERY near future! planning on heading up to btown with ms. laurak who is ending her job in stamford on saturday and then on to htown for a reprise of homecoming (in which I do not pass out at 10 pm) before traipsing back down 89 for thanksgiving dinner in boston at ceppos, diana and glassman’s apt in the north end. maynard’s making the turkey, and as anyone who went to her dinners senior year at the episcopal student center can tell you, (she just lived there – she wasn’t really religious or something) that’s a good thing.

esp since diana is bringing wine b/c she can’t cook. that ought to tell you how we’re batting here . . .

allette also checked in via text message – she says she misses me (and presumably you all) and there is still glitter in her bag. I think we’ve taken this, ‘take the spirit of green key/sd/usual suspects’ to a whole new (physical!) level.)

the living daylights

have been so excited about the new bond coming out on friday that i have been breathing and sleeping 007. including listening to the scores from all the movies on my way to and from work this morning - so i think it is legit to describe my current thoughts in james bond theme song lyrics - haha.

i think the main one right now is:

what does it matter to you
when you gotta a job to do
you got to do it well
you've got to give the other fella hell
- paul mccartney and the wings 'live and let die

i suppose i should not be surprised that i find myself gearing up for phone interviews like i used to get psyched for xc races and basketball games. it's all about giving them hell and being a pressure player. it's such a mind game - bball more than xc - but you could mess with people's heads like no other. in the words of one of my most favorite bball books of all time
the most polite, gentlemanly way to tell 100,000 hostile fans to go to hell is to step up to the free-throw line, down by one with three seconds to go and sink both ends of a one and one without batting an eye
put that in your pipe and smoke it! have one coming up shortly - wish me luck and get the adrenaline pumping.

other thoughts - this weather is driving me CRAZY. make up your mind already. it is too hot outside and then you sweat and smell gross and feel icky. god. no wonder i am so irritable. i'm sure it has something to do with the temperature - we learned in social psych that the number of murders goes up in the summer. i could kill someone at the drop of a hat lately - so i am not surprised to hear this. but, everyone complains about the weather and no one does anything about it. alas.

confirmed 'date' (still unclear what it is) for friday - get excited. if you want to see the guy let me know and i'll blitz you a link - don't dare post it here for fear it will be tracked down.

speaking of tracking stuff down - have encountered a couple d blogs lately that have been v. interesting. people who know people link to other people on their blogs - but i'm not so sure i'd want everyone and their brothers reading this. one of the blogs i have discovered is written by a kid i've hooked up with - VERY interesting seeing another side of him. not quite sure what to make of it. and i can't help but wonder what he would say about me if we were still hooking up when he was writing it. that being said - how amusing would it have been if i had had a blog at school? good lord - probably trouble. having things documented in blitz is bad enough - haha. just call me ms. low key. ;-)

coffee, tea or me baby doll?

so feeling rather pleased with myself, or, as we used to say in Richardson 309, smiling like a self-satisfied cat. I’ve been reading ‘never eat alone’ lately – which I’ve really been enjoying – highly recommend it – but it’s all about networking and pinging and such. So as I’m reading it I’m thinking, who’s in my network that I can make call on, etc. etc./how can I strengthen my network?

and i recall meeting this attractive d ’97 who is pretty high up at a pretty well-known broadcasting company a few weeks ago, and I think to myself – I’d better hang on to this contact. So I send him a ping, b/c at this point it’s pretty clear he’s not going to be my boss in the near future and I want to keep this guy in my network right?

he suggests coffee one afternoon in the near future. due to my bizarre work schedule – the only thing I can do remotely afternoon-like is 6 pm. Who wants to drink coffee at 6 pm? So I respond that it depends on how late he likes to drink coffee – personally I like something stronger at 6 pm, esp when the wknd is in sight (again – he’s not going to be my boss so I can flirt. But I am still kind of shocked at the sauciness). To which he responds, “well then . . . let’s get something stronger.”

And that, my friends, is how it’s done. You’re all invited to the wedding. ;-)

whoa

a little bit disoriented b/c i traveled a lot this wknd, took friday off from work, lazed around and watched movies all day - not really sure what is reality and what isn't. hmmmm.

yes - took friday off from work - i really needed it - had been a tough two weeks with co-workers out and trying to fill in for them and being responsible in the real world and stuff.

sadly my day off was spent in a somewhat working capacity - took the 7 am bus up to boston for a 1 pm meeting. hopefully it will turn into something but it was a lot of me traipsing about boston with a rolley suitcase and biznass casual clothes. happily it was a lovely day out, and it was so nice to not have to be working.

i spent most of the afternoon at the hair salon (that's what i do when i go to boston, get my hair done) - but i figured since i was shelling out lots of money i might as well enjoy the experience.

diana called at 5 saying she was at evan's in cambridge and i should go play pong. we did - got our asses kicked twice in short succession but it was fun to see diana and play pong and drink! diana liked my breasts, we all argued about james bond and talked a lot of trash about where we would boot if we needed to in their basement. (bad choices: washer/dryer; strange hole. good choices: floor; empty beer box).

turns out that christine lives not far from evan, so i went over to see her before we headed out. there we had a lot of grey goose and water (surprisingly good) and got gussied up. not sure how we made it out - but we did. met up with ceppos and went to like three bars. i have very little recognition of any of them - but we were all in fine fine form. apparently i told the bouncer i wasn't allowed to drunk dial, tried putting my credit card in the atm, and peed in the guys room. it was a total blast.

all three of us ended up crashing at christine's where we had 'cheesy chips' (aka nachos made by ceppos) and more grey goose. we put christine to bed early on and then we all crashed too.

had to be back in the city for my sister's visit pretty early on sat - so we got up and headed back to boston. found my sis in chinatown and headed back up to the apt before getting dressed to go out down in the lower east side.

went to the back room - which i love - amy loved it too, and then to blvd for the cornell hotelie party. hit up the joshua tree late night before heading home to crash.

chilled and watched movies this afternoon b/c it was raining and chilly out. feeling exhausted despite the lack of action - this job search stuff is draining and i think about it 24-7. it's exhausting to not know where you will be in a month. working the connections like none other though - maybe, MAYBE it will all pan out. cross your fingers for me and hello monday.

running on empty

crike - crazy week, crazy weekend - just CRAZY! lots to report.

friday night cooked dins with tay tay. we made brocoli, mashed potatoes and chicken and rice cassarole. we were v. impressed with ourselves - esp since taylor's mom, upon hearing we were planning to make dinner, asked taylor if we were having it catered. have a little faith millicent!

had a phone interview with google on sat am - they have like a gazillion rounds - but i think it went well - and at any rate, the experience can't hurt. SOMEDAY something will pan out - just keep swimming i guess.

laurak came in on sat afternoon for charlo's bday celebration. started the evening off by chugging two bottles of champagne - so i was in fine FINE form for a lot of the evening. was really fun to hang out and be silly. megh and pollypocket attended, as well as some of the yale kids and em cha! - always lovely to see her.

we had a delicious dinner in brooklyn that i am happy i remember having, before taking off to fat baby on the lower east side. i really enjoy the les - sort of random, air of danger. we were near the back room that joanna and i enjoyed over the summer so much but i did not make it over there. lots of random kids to see - steph and kcarm made it - always lovely to see them. i met a boy from princeton - i don't think i've ever talked to boys from princeton before. was a little interesting and i was def giving them my hard time - but it was fun. was the perfect stage of drunk - thanks to some prudent skipping of rounds and such throughout the night.

sunday am laurak and i rallied for bkfast at mcdonalds - though sadly they had run out of biscuits by the time we got there - sausage and egg on a muffin is not as good as a sausage biscuit with egg. we then headed to central park to watch the nyc marathon - encountering steger running in the park along the way. we set up shop to cheer about a half-mile from the finish and were there early enough to see the first woman and man go by. diana asked if watching a marathon was really fun - she thought it'd be boring - but it really is so cool. it's like everyone's all in something together and cheering and what was really getting me was that they were a half-mile from being done. they had run 26 miles already and were SOCLOSE to finishing. insane. it made me want to cry. and quote 'she said she usually cried once a day. not b/c she was sad, but b/c the world was so beautiful and life was so short'

walking back home there were all these runners with the foil capes to stay warm and we felt like we were rubbing shoulders with greatness. =) v. inspiring. i think my goal for 2007 will be to run a marathon. it's about time and i need something to focus on. will keep you posted.

another week here in teh office. am taking friday off to go to boston - but i just feel stressed and overwhelmed regardless. kevin said that his mom's astrologist said that early nov is going to be a difficult time for everyone. ain't it the truth. (kevin's parents also don't believe in immunizations - which caused some issues when he wanted to go to africa junior fall).

last night i did tortorous workout - but am happy to report that i feel less sore (though still sore!) than i did last week. one week at a time. i also had the privledge of being drunk-dialed by the men's xc team - who were sitting in food court and wanted me to come up and eat chicken nuggets. i half feel like i should apologize to my bro for putting him in these situations - but then i'm like why? i have no regrets about my choices or behaviors regarding the men's xc team - so i'm not apologizing.

besides - who doesn't love a good drunk dial? ;-)

addendum

i wanted to add a little more to the previous post about friends with money (incidentally, terrible movie but great and relevant concept) - the ny mag goes on to profile a guy who lives on $628 dollars every two weeks, supporting himself and his gf and two kids out of it. when you compare my relatively simple and meager lifestyle to someone who is skipping breakfast and saving his last $4.25 cents for lunch, i'm really not doing that badly at all.

and now for something completely different:

i spend a lot of my time on the phone at work. in some professions, this would be grounds for firing. fortunately, in mine - it's what i get paid to do. and i know you can't tell much from a voice - but there have def been times when i'll be talking to someone and be like - he sounds cute. is that even possible? i know the more sense cues you have the better you can tell if someone's getting you, picking up what you're putting down, etc. and while i try to make my 15 seconds on the phone with a reporter meaningful and different from the other 50 phone pitches he or she has received - i'm not sure it's getting through. i do always smile before i start talking - supposedly you can hear that in someone's voice - but meaningful connection with someone on the west coast? prob not.

bummer. =P

friends with $

grabbed the new york magazine to read on the subway home tonight - it was the money issue - so i was thinking about that - and since i've already blogged about some less-talked about subjects, i might as well throw this hat in the ring.

money. no one talks about it much. this article was interesting - it profiled four friends - all of different incomes and backgrounds - and reported some of their conversations, which in turn revealed their attitudes, about money. one girl was like - in nyc i feel like as soon as i go outside i'm losing money.

i definately agree with that. it's like staying in one's apt, and eating annie's is the only way to stay on budget. in puerto rico karla was informing us of the benefits of living in the midwest when it came to one's budget, and said ny mag article had a comparison of prices for movie tix, 'pricey' dinner, etc. there certainly are a lot of benefits. hmmm. this is one of those things that i'm not sure about b/c i'm relatively new to the real world - i don't know what is real and what is me just being new. kind of like my inclination to leave nyc every wknd. am i doing it b/c i don't want to be in the city, or am i doing it b/c this is my first time every having wknds free TO do it? (as a waitress which i was night and day during vacations for 8 years - you don't get much in the way of nights, wknds and holidays free if you want to make money) guess you'll have to check back in in three years for the answer to this one.

regardless, happily i'd say that most of my friends are pretty conscious of what they spend - we like a good happy hour, a cheap meal - i guess what varies is the frequency that each of us does that. i've never felt like i couldn't do something with my friends b/c of the cost - which is nice - since the money issue is a factor in EVERYTHING - and while i am certainly not saving as much as i'd like, in the words of maynard's mom, i can do lots of things but not everything. that gap will prob widen in the next couple years based on chosen profession - or maybe i just have really great friends that are down to earth regardless (hi everyone). just some thoughts of mine on a sensitive subject.

been chatting with laurak about doing an sd thanksgiving one of the upcoming wknds in boston perhaps. we like the idea of us all getting together and having a dinner and toasting each other and such, since we can not all be together on new years - though those of us that will be on the east coast should DEF make plans to do so. ceppos, when you read this and are like what!, we think we want to come to boston the wknd before tday and celebrate - does that work for you guys? haha. we'll discuss.

anticipation

been listening to my radio station from the cape - cool 102 while working today since i'm the only one in the office and one of their taglines is 'lyrics to live by'.

in that vein, i'm going to continue to post ones that i really like/express how i'm thinking/feeling right now:

we can never know about the days to come
but we think about them anyway
and i wonder if i'm really with you now
or just chasing after some finer day.

anticipation, anticipation
is making me late
is keeping me waiting

and tomorrow we might not be together
i'm no prophet, i don't know natures way
so i'll try to see into your eyes right now
and stay right here, cause these are the good old days.
